Following the Blue Moon

 Journal page, Drozda,  2006

It's been a busy time, no?
As it ought to be during this most active 'doing' time of the year.

Celebrate the Full 'Love' Blue Moon with some dancing.

I'm so happy to share with you the 'Life in Transit' project that I've been investing in since last fall and now launched  as a public art initiative in collaboration with dear artist friend, poet/educator Toni Wynn and nonprofit partner, Tidewater Arts Outreach.

'Life in Transit', a public art/education project, honors and respects the strength and vitality of women around the world who have taken creative action to be liberated from domestic violence and poverty.
As a 'think global, act local', venture LiT invites a group of marginalized and culturally invisible women (who have participated in a community shelter support program in our community) to creatively express their inner strengths and inspire courage through personal art made public.

Please visit our new Face Book page, friend us and give the project a LIKE...we're moving toward sponsorship by our public transit system, enlisting their support in making 'Life in Transit' a community outreach...is your life in transit? ...visit our blog and share your courage and strength.

And may you dance...

Following the Moon: Get a Move on

The Natural Calendar, portable version, Drozda, 2012

Welcome to Following the Moon... I had a terrific 10 days away hosted by Lorain County Community College where I presented an Artist Residency and the Earth Day Eve Creativity Salon...thanks to all... the wonderful Joan Perch, all students and faculty for such a fabulous week.

Students working on Medai Blend, Drozda, 2012

This week the Wisdom Moon carries us through the First Quarter Phase...that means it's time to take an action in direction of your wisdom as it is unfolding. We can't see the Wisdom that we contain we can only express and meet it as it comes to find us.

First Quarter began early morning (EDT) Sunday, April 29 and extends through Wednesday, early evening, May 2.

In honor of both the beauty and wonder of the First Quarter Phase I share my dear artist friend Sandra's writing and her ideas for how you can connect with this potent time...

Following the Moon: Begin Again

Welcome to the new Natural Year!

Welcome to Following the Moon and our first moon cycle of the Natural Year. I'm a week behind...but here we go...this whole year is one to practice being at peace with what is...though of course that does not condone being victimized...ya gotta know how to take a stand.

Speaking of taking a stand...this week we move through the First Quarter Moon Phase, Friday, March 30 through early morning Tuesday, April 3. It's timely to take an action that relates to your Art/Life intention. By all means know what you stand for in your precious Art/Life.

The keyword for this cycle is Clarity...can you see places where you can invite some in?

I began this new Natural Year by having a techno-breakdown...no computer and therefore no postings. When I asked for Clarity I saw that this was actually no problem. So I didn't turn it into one.

I'm an outdoors gal...so I went outside to play... lovin' it.

Following the Moon: Open the Door

Happy New Natural Year!

Welcome to Following the Moon, March 19, 2012 the doorway of the Equinox opens to a new beginning!

I like to say, 'Something wonderful is emerging' when Aries comes to call . Read my dear friend Sandra's take on what's coming to meet us astrologically.

Can you feel and connect with the space that lies before you in the 12 Moon/Months ahead? The idea now is to be visualizing the birth of this new phase of your Art/Life as you communicate from a place of balance and inner peace. There's a grand challenge ahead and solutions to problems include listening, listening and listening even more deeply to your intuition... call it your Muse, your Inner Guide, Shaman, Hero, Grandmother, Alchemist, Advisor ... name this part so you can really become intimate.

Following the Moon: Wisdom Wonder

Wisdom Wonder, Drozda, Encaustic, 2010, 6x4"

'Wisdom Begins in Wonder' Socrates

Welcome to 'Following the Moon'. Today, Monday, May 2, we're on the threshold of the 'Wisdom' Moon cycle which begins tomorrow.

In May there is the deepening opportunity to visualize the wisdom that you carry into your Art/Life walk. Each year at the time of the Spring Equinox we begin again, we're re-birthed if you will, and the canvas, the slate, the stage is clear for starting a new twelve month segment of the Art/Life journey.

The New Moon begins in the early morning hours Tuesday, May 3 and extends through late Friday night, May 7 (EST). Each month during these few days you can reboot your project and visualize where you intend to go during the coming four weeks. As you move into this first week of the cycle use your ability to hold an image of what your goal looks like.

These days are always well spent in looking forward. Gaze toward your biggest opportunity to stretch. This entire year is asking a great deal of us and as artists it's important to be inventive and courageous and...as this moon's keyword suggests: wise.

Following the Moon: The Heart Soars

Bird Dance, Drozda, Acrylic/canvas, 12x12" 2011

The heart soars up like a bird
From a nest of care
Up, up to a larger sky
To a softer air.

No eye can measure its flight
And no hand can tame;
It mounts in beauty and light,

In music and flame.
Of all the changes of Time
There is none like this;
The heart soars like a bird
At the stroke of bliss.

The Flight of the Heart

Welcome to Following the Moon and the beginning days of the 'Renewal' Moon cycle. We stepped through the door into this cycle on the New Moon February 2. This is clearly one of my favorite times of year. Between now and Friday the Crescent Phase brings its gifts. Stay in sync with whatever you are currently investigating. You might ask, 'What in my Art/Life could benefit from a bit of revitalization, replenishment, rekindling, repair, restoration or... going for the gold...where do I feel a renaissance taking place?

This is when you can take the time each month to do your focused research.

Delve into the area that you would like to renew. Make inquiries, exploring your options. This very lively place in the Winter/Spring quadrant of The Mystery is a natural intention setting zone.

'Renewal' energy abounds between now and Friday, February 10 (predawn EST).
I love this quote from Faith by Sharon Salzberg, "...when I complained about feeling inadequate, Khenpo challenged me with, "Why be so anemic? Why not aspire to be a liberated being, for the sake of all beings? Why not? and later she, again quoting Khenpo, "The price of gold goes up and down, but the value of gold remains the same. Your experiences will always change, will go up and down, but what is of innate value in you lies in your awareness and love."

And another renaissance thought form from Igor Stravinsky, "In order to create there must be a dynamic force, and what force is more potent than love."

All year you are being given the opportunity to put these kinds of teachings into place within the context of your Art/Life realizing that you living in a period of Renaissance right now.

As the Crescent Phase wanes on Friday, February 10, in the predawn (EST) catch the shift that opens the door to the First Quarter Phase when it's all about action pertaining to what you are choosing to renew.

I did a bit of sleuthing this morning and was pleased to find reminders everywhere I looked of how easily attached I get to certain ways of thinking and doing. I notice how I can seize up and go into overwhelm. You know the feeling. So much to do and no way to get it all done.

In my investigation I came upon this gift. I placed it into my calendar so that, in addition to my morning sitting time/formal meditation I will renew myself at midday with a 5 minute breathing break. I've done this several times in the last few days and find that now even when I'm doing other things my breathing is deeper calmer more rooted. Let me know what you think if you give it a try.

I find that this time of year is rather perfect for breaking some sort of pattern of rigidity. Remember that ice is hard yet it's water just the same.

Symbolically there is space now to thaw some aspect of the Art/Life in preparation for movement.

See you next Monday for the Gibbous phase of the Renewal Moon,
~Iona~

Following the Moon: Hearty to the Core

Portrait of the Atist as a Young Girl, Drozda, ink on bristol board, 8x10"

Welcome to Following the Moon and the closing days of the Cleansing Moon. Each year we move through the first four weeks of the calendar being able to consciously, or intuitively, clear out the cobwebs. This allows us to refine our commitment and make space for the infusion of Renewal that comes in February.

Since last Saturday, January 29, late in the evening (EST), the Balsamic phase of the Cleansing cycle has been providing time to rest. As you’ve been noticing, week by week, we’re all deep in the quadrant of the year that makes available ample opportunity to hibernate, hunker down, relax, reclaim and rejuvenate. This entire quadrant that extends for just over 90 days carries the quality of The Mystery. Here at the tail end of the Cleansing cycle you might think of it as a vacation within a vacation…you might:

Imagine sinking into a rejuvenating well distilling out the impurities in body, speech and mind.

Imagine a long spa day while you’re on holiday.

Imagine you’re already in a rest and recoup state and you go even deeper by devoting a stretch of time to being inaccessible to the outside world.

Following the Moon: Like the Heartbeat of the Universe

Journal Page, Drozda, media blend, 12x9", 2011

Welcome to Following the Moon and the Disseminating Cycle which extends through the early morning of Wednesday, January 26. The Disseminating Phase is the place to be for sharing what you have gained thus far. Since the New Moon was January 4 you have only to look over your shoulder to reconnect to what you've learned, and now, in a way that reflects the energy of the Natural Wheel, discover your own way to express this learning out into your Art/Life.  Demonstration can relate to any area of the Art/life and generally provides you with the chance to be reminded what you're up to, what interests you and how you would move this information out into the world. What's your platform?

Following the Moon: The Light Heart

The Four Directions (detail), Drozda 2004

White ink on Black illustration board

October is the Experience month of the year. Have you been noticing the way that the last 18 days have unfolded for you? It's quite something to simply allow this to be a glimpse, a mini clip or trailer, of what 2011 will bring. I jot a few notes at the close of each day. I was genuinely taken aback when I did my review from a year ago. I like what I see and yet I found myself whispering: Be careful what you pay attention to...because more is on the way.

Follow the Moon: Celebrating Quirkiness

Shrine the Divine I, Drozda 2010
7x5"
An encaustic experiment

Here we are one week into the Trust/Love Moon! This is an excellent time for discovering creative avenues to explore.

'Luna See' is presented as an artist's tool to help you find a gentler and kinder way to work with time. 'Luna See' will do no harm and may bring you much joy. I offer it as an instrument for affecting the quality of the day as the highest of arts.

In order to obtain and maintain balance, 2010 requires that you have a basic understanding of intent, intuition or a 'gut feeling' about situations. Throughout this year, self-esteem will be the indicator for the direction to take. Notice what is asked of you as you feel your capacity to endure. Stamina and fortitude are going to show you what you're made of and what can be accomplished.

Walt Whitman brings this brilliant touchstone:

O I could sing such grandeurs and glories about you!

You have not known what you are,

you have slumber'd upon yourself all your life,

Your eyelids have been the same as closed most of the time...

Whoever you are! claim your own at any hazard!

These shows of the East and West are tame compared to you,

These immense meadows, these interminable rivers, you are immense and interminable as they...

There is a poetic component to all that unfolds this year. Whether you deem the experience as favorable or unfavorable, there is action needed. The quality of the year requires your participation. It's a good time to apply the adage of 'this ain't no dress rehearsal' to every moment and to all that you get involved in.

The spotlight this year is on the solar plexus chakra, the third of the seven major energy centers in the body. In the Eastern tradition, this area is referred to as the balance point or center of balance. It lies behind the umbilicus, and placing your attention there is a reminder that you are always connected to the Eternal Mother. Be capable, balanced, expressive, creative and poetic in 2010.

Between today, Monday, August 16 and next Monday, August 23, the moon's phases (First Quarter and Gibbous) bring the opportunity for initiative and analysis regarding this cycle's goal. Taking initiative requires action. Get involved with the change you need to be making so that you can consciously trust your life more. It helps to participate fully by moving your body as much as you can. Dance, sway, fast-walk, swim laps while holding your goal in your heart. You have until Friday morning to actively feel and move your vision/goal for this Trust cycle. Naturally you don't stop moving from then on...that would be silly to consider...however this phase is particularly geared to get you flowin' with your goal. How great to take advantage of that. Come Friday the timing of this Trust/Love cycle opens out so that you can revise the vision you set at the New Moon on August 9. Sink into a deeper level of Self-Trust.

Be impetuous, and with your goal in mind, do one thing that is spontaneous and electric. One thing that gives you a feeling of s t r e t c h. Can you feel the heat when you allow space for a bit of wildness in conjunction with your objective? You have between now (Monday, August 16 and Friday morning, August 20 for this to happen. Funny, isn't it, that you can 'plan' to be unstructured? Of course you can. Life is all about paradox and polarities. By Friday the experience will naturally lead you to filter, digest, revise and ready for the illumination to follow next week.

Trust is analogous to faith, belief, confidence and Self- reliance. As mentioned last week: Summer each year offers the peak of possibility. Please continue to consider the positive, determined, venture-forth aspect of your innate inventive powers. The 8 moon slices of the monthly pie that unfold from New Phase (August 9-12) through Balsamic Phase (September 5-8) provide ground-breaking focus. Conviction and expectation are powerful adjuncts to manifesting your dream during these busy summer months.

Continue to establish awareness of the places in your art/ life where you could tear out, strengthen, and rebuild. Keep your eye on the prize while the year and all of your experiences shape your newly defined character. Since these changes can only happen if you restructure you may as well sink a little deeper into believing that what you want for your Art/life is what your Art/life wants for you. Trust that.

The Encaustic Retreat Gang:
Judy, Sheila, Betsy, our host/teacher/guide Karen, Me

I began the week attending a day-long encaustic retreat. The company, environment and the opportunity to dip into a new medium were all superb. In the middle of the week I took a huge plunge into the unknown...it has everything to so with trusting in one's deepest intention...more about that in the months to come. The week ended with an 8 mile kayak journey into the Great Dismal Swamp. In each of these situations I had to trust myself to do something new without fearing that I'd fall short of self imposed limitations/expectations.

Lake Drummond, Drozda 2010

Each August I consciously make changes and make space for new things. I do this precisely because this is an unnerving time of the year for me. I don't plan it to be so...but there it is and I don't mind admitting it. Perhaps it's an ancient echo of the biggest challenge of this life. Or maybe it's the place on the wheel where the greatest opportunity lies. I don't pretend to'blind trust walk' haven't you? Disconcerting at best. And what's needed? Trust. Capitol... T R U S T.

I feel fortunate since in the Art/life I am educated in: 'trust the process'. I have materials and media at hand. I have ideas and inspirations and BIG DREAMS. The question: how to allow all of this greatness to find its natural flow in the world (smile)... how to permit unhurried expansion and sharing to advance? I love a good challenge and so comes each years Trust cycle.

Art Light Heart Light Calendar page 2009

In line with this dynamic cycle I delight in sharing with you a page from the calendar produced by Dana Cunningham Anderson of Art Light Studio at The Bend at Moon Creek. She says in "how i make a calendar":

Each quotation is chosen over  the period of the preceding year AND in a last -minute search to create a balance of ideas. I stamp each quotation by hand, most often in black ink on white paper--a relished meditative process. Time slows down.I sit in a room with some old medieval  monk I've known a long time. He hand copies his manuscript, letter by letter, as i stamp my hand-carved letters at a small writing table next to his. We talk. He misses me when I am not there, welcomes me when I return..."

For many years Dana's work has held its place within my studio. Hers is a subtle and yet radiant work. She brings a reminder to me that what we produce is of value not due to its pomp and circumstance so much as for its heart. She reminds me of the quiet import of living with the Muse within AND beside me.

Between now and next Monday spontaneously engage in at least one new thing that somehow relates to your current Art/life goal. Once you've gone for the s t r e t c h filter and digest the experience so that you squeeze out the goodness.

The height of summer is the appropriate time to celebrate your quirkiness and individuality. This month's reminder: as artists we have a justified and historic obligation to be singular. Rejoice. Trust your process while you keep in mind the spacious and organic impulse to explore your edge place. Doing that now is being genuine in this area of the years wheel.

Continue to imagine the possibility as you trust your creative process. It is like no other creative process on the planet. How grand that is.

Special thanks to all dear commenter's this past week...what with retreats, studios and kayaking I didn't get in my replies..Thanks!

Following the Moon with Gratitude

Rescue, Drozda 2001
24x30"
Acrylic on wood

'Luna See' looks at time and gentling our movement through time.  It offers an art/life resource for affecting the quality of the day as the highest of arts.

Welcome to the last hours of the Disseminating Moon phase where the emphasis is upon demonstration and sharing.  Pay attention to whether sending your vibe out into the world helps you to Trust the process of your art/life at this time. Often we learn to trust life best when still, quiet and solitary. Other times we need to be active and in touch. July has just provided you with 31 days of Growth so that you could access and activate deeper levels of TrustTrust happens now....can you lean into the opportunity?

Coming from a background of violence and trauma I can state without doubt that this has been my most challenging point on the wheel...the main event that catapaulted me into 16 years of gripping post traumatic stress took place in the month of August. Yet step by step healing happens. And there is rarely any situation that has to hold you captive when you Trust the manner in which the art/life grows to meet you. Its quite stunning and often so unexpected isn't it?

                                                                            ~Virgil ~

Tuesday, August 3 through Friday, August 6 we're in the Last Quarter/Third Quarter phase of this four weeks. This is when we have the chance to be mindfully grateful for all that has visited since July 11. It's a lovely time for reflective gratitude and realization of all the gifts that your art/life offers.

So often we confuse ourselves thinking that as the artist we must be constantly creating in order to justify the title. Here's the beauty: we are artists. We don't cease being creative and gifted and even skilled no matter how long we must sometimes be removed from our media of choice. The lovely and instinctive transition from the active sharing of last week to the realignment that comes now can help us to assimilate this truth. You might interpret this 3.5 day phase as if it were a sigh. Ahhhhh. Let it all go. Drop it. What's the hurry? Where are you trying to get to?
Paradoxically the push of this very active time of the year that we're in still functions best when we make haste slowly.

On Friday the Balsamic phase of the cycle enters and we have from then until the New Moon on Monday, August 9 to withdraw even a bit further so as to contemplate.

Are you beginning to feel the flow of the lunar phases and do you get a sense of how your art/life can flow with them?

Within each 29.6 day cycle we recieve these last days of the moon's passage to heal, lie fallow, so as to dream of what will be. From Friday through Monday... take time to rest. Naturally life goes on yet take the time to imagine that you will be birthing a new/renewed part of yourself.  For this brief time imagine that you are lying still, in utero, visualizing what you may bring forth when the next cycle begins. It's one of the grand wonders of being the artist that we are giving birth continuously simply by sending our breath out into the world. We are enough.

As we step into August 2010 the overall vibration shifts. Notice light. The dazzle and the shining. Really practice being conscious. Be your own dazzling light. I appreciate what Suzanne has to say in her recent post.

The idea might be similar to the Buddhist teaching which suggests that we practice as if our 'hair were on fire'. Consider that image. That's dedication.

Where is your dedication right now? There isn't any standard that says that you have to be doing your being in any prescribed way...actually it's really healthy if you can simply trust that what is happening for you now is exactly what is meant to be happening. This is a courageous act. Most of us are busy thinking 'it ought to be different than it is'. Yet to Trust is to do just that. Let all things be exactly as they are.

To begin to connect with the best quality of August consider how breathing helps to direct your thoughts. Gently be with that idea for a moment. Take that in: your breath directs your thoughts. In line with that is; this month watch your thinking patterns and notice your conversation. Pay attention to the way you use words. How do you talk to yourself? I was behind a car this week that had a bumper sticker reading: HUMAN KIND: be both.

Really notice the way you speak, how you describe, explain, depict, illustrate, express. Does your language lift you? Do you drag yourself and others down? Just notice.

TRUST is the keyword for August and it brings reminders, lessons and tests. Each experience arrives to help  us see how well we actually trust the challenges and the sweetness of the art/life. See if, for you, there is an inner urge to express your ideals, launch an invention (as in a new art form), align with your highest inner directives, gain a clearer connection to your spiritual vision. There is no need for pressure.
In Buddhist teachings we're advised to recognize that as humans we bounce continuously between the 'Eight Worldly Dharmas'. They are pleasure/pain, gain/loss, praise/blame, fame/disgrace.

We think that if we get pleasure, gain, praise and fame we'll be happy. We run away from pain, loss, blame and disgrace and judge them failures.

Once again it fits to bring in Pema...she's wise, feisty and makes it so understandable:

From When Things Fall Apart by Pema Chodron:
"The irony is that we make up the eight worldly dharmas. We make them up in reaction to what happens to us in this world. They are nothing concrete in themselves... In meditation, we can notice how emotions and moods are connected with having lost or gained something, having been praised or blamed, and so forth. Gradually our practice evolves. We start understanding that, just like us, other people also keep getting hooked by hope and fear. Everywhere we go, we see the misery that comes from buying into the eight worldly dharmas. ... [This is] the beginning of growing up... When we begin just to try to accept ourselves, the ancient burden of self-importance lightens up considerably...Having compassion starts and ends with having compassion for all [the] unwanted parts of ourselves, all those imperfections that we don't even want to look at. Compassion isn't some kind of self-improvement project or ideal that we're trying to live up to. There's a slogan in the Mahayana teachings that says, 'Drive all blames into oneself.' The essence of this slogan is, 'When it hurts so bad, it's because I am hanging on so tight.' What it implies is that pain comes from holding on so tightly to having it our own way and that one of the main exits we take when we find ourselves in an unwanted situation or an unwanted place, is to blame."

The energy this August is helping you learn to trust that no matter what your experience you can observe your reaction and response with a 'wait and see' attitude. This can help you take a long view or an eagle's eye view...either way the idea is to take this opportunity to learn that we're all in this together. You are not alone.

One touch of nature makes the whole world kin.

Every 90 days there's a turn to the wheel and you can set a new goal or build onto what you have already manifest. It's so focused and at the same time so open  to your own interpretation.

August 1, was the cross quarter point between Summer Solstice and Fall Equinox...that places you at the midpoint in this current 90 day pattern. What do you want to accomplish by September 22? No need to push...it can be subtle and for yourself alone.

Or you can gather and share the joy of what has been created and what is yet to come.

'Following the Moon': How Does Your Garden Grow?

In the Temple Garden, Drozda 1994
48x48"
Acrylic on Masonite
Private collection

This weekly posting of 'Luna See' is presented as an art/life tool. You may find it useful. It's quite spectacular for relaxing time. You may even become more creative with your conscious movement through time. It's offered as an instrument for affecting the quality of the day as the highest of arts. There is a companion monthly Luna See newsletter published at each New Moon. You can subscribe here.

Welcome to the Full 'Growth' Moon! The Full Phase arrived last evening July 25 at 9:38 p.m. and extends through July 30, Friday at 12:30 a.m. (est). That's five ful days...an unusually long stretch for one phase. Consider it a gift...a time for reflection on the stunning growth opportunities that this year has offered in terms of being a pioneer in some area of your art/life. Tuck into your awareness that the whole year is helping us to grow by learning a new level of endurance.

Now you can look over your shoulder to July 11.  Two weeks have been invested. Remember that Solar eclipse? It created an interesting springboard for the increase and expansion offered to us this year. That Solar Eclipse extends its influence all the way into December. It places emphasis on the way you show yourself  'Out There'. It brings a terrific opportunity to pay attention now regarding what we would choose to grow by then.

You might decide to place your feet flat against the floor, imagine making direct contact with the earth, the Earth Mother, the Divine Feminine. Breathe in the quiet. If we continue to breathe deep as a tool for slowing down at this most active time of the year, we'll have a balanced energy reserve to draw upon in the months ahead. You may think that you don't ever seem to get quiet for long these days but a little bit of 'Luna See' can help you to remember. Quieting time in this way offers a temperate focus rather than a frenetic pace.

A Prayer for the New Millennium

May all beings everywhere be awakened, healed, peaceful and free; May there be peace in this world, and an end to war, poverty, violence, and oppression; And may we all together complete the spiritual journey.

Between today, Monday, July 25 and next Monday, August 2, the moon's phases (Full, Disseminating) continue to provide creative focus points for reflection as well as sharing. Reflection means that until Friday you might consider what stands in your way from accomplishing your vision/goal for this Growth cycle. What did you choose to Grow during this time? How have your studio projects developed up to this moment? Are they ready to shine out into the world in some way during the next week? Maybe/maybe not...following the moon is not a rigid task master. In fact the longer we spiral on lunar month by lunar month the more a lovely rhythm unfolds; imagine a personal creative tidal inhale/exhale. So relaxed.
At each Full moon you can 'gaze back over your shoulder' and see your vision as it began. AH. Look at all that's happened since July 11. Hindsight being what it is you can observe your trail with clarity. Now, gently notice: what have you not yet addressed. The week ahead is ripe for inserting one more aspect of actualizing your sacred dream for your art/life.
July's keyword of Growth and its attendant idea of opening out will soon turn to Augusts' Trust. Summer each year offers the peak of possibility for the assertive, ambitious, go forth aspect of the natural years' push. Each of the 8 successive phases that unfold from New Phase(July 11-14) through Balsamic Phase (August 5-9) provides a focus. Focus is so helpful in manifesting your vision.

What have you been growing?... can you trust what's to come?

August arrives on Sunday and brings with it the cross quarter day of Lammas also called Lughnasadh. You are at the midpoint of your current 90 day art/life goal. The will to trust what you grow becomes the focus point now. This time of year is referred to traditionally as 'first harvest'. Play with these words and see how they fit into your creative spirit. No one else like you has ever been here before. Again, ask yourself, 'What are you growing?'

Don't you love being the artist who has the courage to express a new view and a true heart connection? Can't you feel this whole year being about feeling what is happening 'in the gut' as you forge a new sense of identity? This renewed sense of identity requires that you know how to do the 'endure-dance'. When you practice conscious endure-dancing you grow stronger. Your strength helps us all grow into new levels of trusting this miraculous opportunity called life. Each of us deserves to celebrate the steps and stages that have brought us to HERE and now.

All the past up to a moment ago is your legacy. You have a right to it.

I once had a very difficult time with time. Violence and post traumatic stress can clearly make it difficult and challenging to trust life. I felt pressure. I wondered how life was ever going to happen well enough so as not to be filled with continual unpredictable bouts of panic/fear. Naturally there are times when I still get that demon jumping out of the bushes to surprise me...to test me. Its job is to try to stop me from loving and celebrating my precious life. Twice so far this year that demon has done its dance! That's when I spring into action and do what I call the  'Endure-dance'! Try this: Throw your hands up toward the sky, extend your longest finger on each hand toward the ethers, bounce about, kick up your heels, step out and do your best moves...call up your light heart and then call out to all seen and unseen, known and unknown demons, "You may not enter here!"

'Following the Moon' is for help in remembering to face the heaviness and anxiety that jumps out onto the path of the art/life. Look it in the eye. My teacher called this process 'Getting On Time'. I call it Luna See. I love being a Luna-tic in a world that is ever uplifted by balance and wholeness.

There's a kind of wandering opportunity in the gentle rhythm of the lunar patterns. It isn't another thing to believe in or work at, it's simply natural timing. Tuning into the phases brings a joyful stretch to art/life days.

Between now and next Monday notice how you take stock of your gifts. Create a way to surprise yourself by sharing some aspect of what you've grown during this cycle.

As this most outgoing season of the year unfolds share your awareness with your community/tribe. Be sure that you imagine the possibility. Trust your art/life and its amazing growth thus far. I'm so glad that you're here bringing your wonder to life.

It was 105 degrees today so I went kayaking in my backyard on Lake Smith with good reading:

Following the Moon

'Healing Heart for Tim', Drozda 2010

Welcome to the New Moon. Growth is the keyword through July. Keep in mind that the New Moon on July 11 brought a Solar eclipse. Sandra Mosley  offers some interesting points of reference for your creative path.

In the 21 days remaining in this month I invite you to:
Pause a moment.
Close your eyes.
Take a deep calming breath.
Simply imagine the creative possibility before you.

The idea is that you can choose to slow down a bit even in the midst of the most active time of the year. You can recognize how you intuitively align, or you can start now, to become more consciously tuned in to the eternal rhythms of the lovely lunar patterns.
Note: 'Luna See' is presented as an artist tool for looking at time and your movement through time. It is offered as an instrument for gentling through the day.

'Earth Calendar', Drozda 1995
Ink and Prismacolor on Bristol

"...the light of the moon waxes and wanes, giving an endless succession of full moons and new moons. Think also of the continuous rising and falling of the planetary tides, inseparably linked to the invisible pull of the moon's gravity, as the earth spins and the moon moves more slowly than the earth turns. Without these eternal rhythms, our ancestral forms of life would never have emerged from the sea to find dry land.

You and I, being physically composed of more than 70 percent water, are moved and touched by the same powerful and invisible forces of the moon. " Joel and Michelle Levey

Between today, Monday, July 12 and next Monday, July 19, the moon's phases (new, crescent, first quarter) continue to provide you with creative focus points for visualization, research and action. Until Wednesday morning be setting your intention for this cycle. What do you choose to Grow during time? What are your studio projects and how will you allow time and space for them to come into being?

At each New moon you can give birth to the next piece of your vision. You don't have to start from scratch. Think of a spiral that unwinds through the year. Visualize where your over-all sense of creative identity is at this time. How's it growing?

Creating a Mind Map or a vision page collage between now and August 9 will bring clarity to this segment of the year's spiral.

July brings with it the keyword of Growth. Think about creative expansion. The idea is to continue tapping into your vision for the 29.6 days of the cycle. Each of the 8 successive phases that unfold from New (July 11-14) through Balsamic (August 5-9) provides a focus.
What are you now growing within the ground of your creative soil?

Our planet needs the artist who has the courage to express a new view and a true heart connection. This whole year is about feeling what is happening 'in the gut' as you forge a new sense of identity.  A renewed sense of identity requires that you know how to endure. When you practice conscious endurance you grow stronger and more capable.

My Short Story:
Each year at this time I have the anniversary of one of my art/life's most defining moments. We all get those and it's useful to be clear on what they are.
It was this point in the summer calendar when, as a young and trusting woman, I arranged to visit a house full of my artist friends on the campus of Case Western Reserve University. I recount that story in my graphic memoir published starting here last summer.

Telling that story, even though I've gone through decades of healing, was a profound and emotionally creative experience. I used a new medium, the Sumo paint program. I put this intense story of violence 'out there' by placing it into a blog format.

I'll never forget how anxious and exposed I felt sitting here alone in my wonderfully tranquil home feeling every cell of my body recounting the experience as the simple Sumo images emerged.  It was chilling and empowering simultaneously.

By writing/drawing the memoir I was facing my fear of being seen at a very deep and a brand new level. I had echoes of demons reminding me that: being seen is very dangerous. Those voices tried to stop me. I felt possessed. I could watch the part of me that tried to convince me that if I did this, if I continued to work on this graphic memoir, something very bad would happen to me again. I didn't stop.

In creating those weeks of blog posts... I grew. It felt like the last vestige of reclaiming my authentic power. It required decades of growing to reach that point and it was a monumental creative event that no one even needed to see....and very few did. Growing can be like that. Private. Monumental.

I had told this deeply personal, yet universal woman's story, over the years to intimate friends and in women's shelters. I'd given a keynote address at a symposium on sexual violence. I had once been 'raped by the pen' when a reporter asked where my art is sourced and I told him the story of that summer "off the record".
He and his editor then proceeded to betray my trust when they went ahead and published my private journey in the popular arts monthly magazine that carried my 'whole story' thus 'exposing me' raw and naked to my community. I didn't know.... but my Muse knew... I was ready to endure and grow.

I have tremendous power and authority for my art/life as a result of these woven story lines. They don't control me, they remind me.

Be awake. Be conscious.

Have a pattern that provides the qualities you are choosing to grow in your precious art/life.

Don't have a goal? Don't know what this remaining 21 days of the July 'Growth' cycle is about for you? No problem. Your Muse knows and is gently, silently waiting for your engagement. Ask for guidance.
Isn't it lovely how, when we move into August, growth will gently place trust at our feet, lapping like a gentle soothing wave.

Be certain of this: When honest love speaks, when true admiration begins, when excitement rises, when hate curls like smoke, you need never doubt that creativity will stay with you for a lifetime.
